It is about people creating all kinds of things with the help of new technologies such as 3D printers, programmable cutters and mini-computers. These making technologies allow everyone to create just about anything themselves. However, not everyone has the same opportunity to take part.

Researchers at Open Lab (Newcastle University) are therefore interested in how making can be made more inclusive, accessible and available to the wider public. We are building a so-called Portable Makerspace and organising creative pop-up making sessions at different locations open to the public.

Take Part and make your own useful stuff!
We invite all adults who have an interest in making “stuff” on their own to participate
in this study. Especially those, who are not happy with how “things” are and just want
to create/fix/improve the objects in their daily life.

No previous knowledge is needed! Just a curiosity for making and an interest in learning new tools. You will have the chance to learn how to use state-of-the-art making technologies and to work on your own individual projects. Participation is completely free of charge. We provide all materials and tools and you can keep everything you create. In return, we will study how you and others make use of the Portable Makerspace and collect some data which will help us to adapt it to the different needs of a diverse audience and to guarantee a safe and fun making experience for everyone.

Does this sound interesting to you?
To find out more or to get involved, please contact Janis Lena Meissner.

E-mail: makingusefulstuff@gmail.com
Twitter: @MakeUsefulStuff
Facebook: MakingUsefulStuff

Have you heard about the Maker Movement?
